Vet is swamped, so I can't get an appointment today. Made an appointment for Tuesday.

While he's a bit sluggish, he's eating just fine.

Apple’s App Store Tops 1.5 billion Downloads – Apple announced yesterday that the App Store has sold 1.5 billion applications in its first year, and that the store now has 65,000 apps to offer consumers. “The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," CEO Steve Jobs said. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up." It won’t be for lack of trying. Research In Motion, Google, Nokia and Verizon have or are attempting to get in the app game, but they have a long way to go compared to Apple. Why Hulu Succeeded as Other Video Sites Failed - Many people watch free, advertising-supported episodes of shows on sites like Hulu. Why were so many people in the technology world wrong about Hulu? It was an idea that seemed like a relic of the worst excesses of the dot-com era: a portal for content run by a joint venture of media companies. Yet Hulu is triumphant when most other video sites have languished. Hulu has proved that there is value in having a portal for video. People go there as well as to NBC.com and Fox.com. If a company like Hulu demanded too much of a cut of the ad revenue, a network certainly could pull its programs off and its audience would still only be one click away. That's why it makes sense for Hulu to be owned by the main networks it distributes. It can help its owners mainly by making it easier for them to find viewers and only secondarily making a profit. The New York Times (Bits blog), online.

Totally love Hulu.

If you haven't checked it out, you're missing something!

Music Labels Reach Online Royalty Deal- After a two-year battle, record labels and online radio stations have agreed on new royalty rates that cover music streaming. The new agreement treats sites differently depending on their size and business model. It applies to companies that make most of their money from streaming music, so webcasters like CBS Radio, which runs online music services for AOL and Yahoo!, are not part of it. It covers the period from 2006 through 2015 for big sites and through 2014 for small sites. Webcasters with significant advertising revenue, like Pandora or Slacker, will pay the greater of 25 percent of revenue or a fee each time a listener hears a song. AT&T's Designs for the Wireless MarketAtlanta</st1:place></st1:city>, a team of AT&T wireless employees are coming up with innovative ways for people to use the company's wireless network. The idea is to go beyond cellphones and hook up all manner of electronics to the Internet to change the way people live and work. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson believes that figuring out how to take advantage of mobile access to the Internet will be critical to AT&T's growth. Stephenson wants the Atlanta "Emerging Devices" team to help AT&T gain share in what by 2013 is forecast to be a $93 billion market for linking gadgets to wireless networks. In the future, AT&T plans to offer more advanced gadgets including digital cameras that link to the Net for sharing and printing photos, tools that help city agencies monitor parking meters from afar and devices that alert businesses when they need to replace candy or soda in vending machines. BusinessWeek, online.</span></font>

Keep those innovations coming. I like being employed.

As for work today, I didn't kill the computers though the programmers struck again, but the systems calmed down towards the end of the day.

Survey: Americans Confused by Smartphone Offers - A survey of 1,000 American adults that was commissioned by Best Buy Mobile reveals consumers' confusion over smartphones. Released on June 30, the survey indicates that 47 percent of consumers who don't yet own smartphones are confused by the vast assortment of features and models available. As the number of smartphones available from wireless companies balloons in the upcoming holiday season, experts expect consumer confusion to increase further. Best Buy hopes to solve this problem by doing a better job explaining capabilities and features of the different devices to consumers. Consumers also need to start approaching buying phones the same way they do laptops, and to start doing more homework. BusinessWeek (Tech Beat blog), online.

[AdJ] Netflix Looks to Future

Netflix Looks to Future – For Netflix, the future is Internet delivery, but DVD rentals are still strong. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings believes DVD rentals have four to nine years to keep growing, despite inroads in Internet delivery of movies to set-top TV boxes. Analysts agree that for all the hoopla over new media formats and streaming video websites, there’s still enormous demand for DVDs since there is no “great” mass market streaming option yet. Netflix streams videos to TVs from the Web, via set-top boxes and Blu-ray players from LG and Samsung and the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game system. Hastings won’t say exactly how popular the online streaming is but says it’s seen “phenomenal” usage. Hastings believes offering both mail rentals and free streaming gives subscribers the best of both worlds. USA Today, online.
